ADVERTORIAL: Safety Secrets: driver coaching 101
Posted: 30-Jun-2022 |

Our roads are full of unknowns. Slippery surfaces, traffic, other drivers – the only things we can truly control are ourselves. That’s why Kiwi transport companies must ensure each of their drivers are capably trained. Since drivers directly impact road safety, supporting and coaching them is a big step toward safer roads for everyone. With so much at stake, it’s time to prioritise driver coaching with these steps.

  1. Be proactive. Don’t wait for something bad to happen, and instead, coach your drivers in road safety from day one.
  2. Encourage driver awareness. Most of us believe we are good drivers, and blame mistakes on others on the road. That’s why it is important for your drivers to actively seek out any weak areas to improve safety for everyone. Introducing a telematics solution like driver scorecards can be a good way to do so, as they give your drivers data-driven insight into their driving habits. This shows both you and your driver what they need to work on.
  3. Introduce in-cab coaching. When learning to drive, most of us tried to drive as perfectly as possible, because we had a coach sitting beside us. Solutions like smart dashcams function like in-cab coaches. Newly added alerts that capture speed in different speed zones, and running stop signs and traffic lights help your drivers identify issues and correct themselves in real-time.
