Aberfeldy Coastal Shipping Launch A “Game Changer” For NZ Supply Chain

The Maritime Union of New Zealand has welcomed the announcement by Aberfeldy Shipping that it will launch a dedicated coastal freight service in December, hailing the move as a major boost for domestic supply chains and the maritime industry.

The service, operated by Aberfeldy Shipping will utilise two multi-purpose vessels, the MV ICS Silver Lining and MV Himala, linking regional ports with major import and export hubs.

The vessels will be operated by New Zealand crews working under Kiwi terms and conditions, creating up to 77 maritime jobs.

Maritime Union of New Zealand National Secretary Carl Findlay says the initiative is an outstanding development that demonstrates real confidence in the “blue highway”.

“Aberfeldy’s commitment to invest in New Zealand-crewed shipping is a massive vote of confidence in our maritime workforce and our regional economies,” says Findlay.

“Following the loss of Pacifica Shipping’s Moana Chief earlier this year, our domestic supply chain was left severely exposed. This new service fills an urgent gap, provides choice for cargo owners, and provides a vital boost for seafaring jobs.”

Findlay says the private investment from Aberfeldy proves commercial appetite exists for domestic coastal shipping, but says it also throws down an challenge to all political parties contesting the upcoming general election.

“New Zealand is an isolated island nation where 99% of trade travels by sea, yet for decades central Government has allowed our domestic fleet to run down. When international supply lines are disrupted, or when natural disasters like Cyclone Gabrielle or the Kaikōura earthquake take out road and rail corridors, coastal shipping is what keeps the country connected and freight moving.”

“What we need from this election is a comprehensive, enduring Coastal Shipping Policy that locks in national resilience for the long haul.”

Mr Findlay says an important issue is dedicated funding for domestic training berths for young Kiwi seafarers.

MUNZ is urging the incoming Government to embed coastal shipping directly into national infrastructure and emergency logistics planning, to ensure regional ports and industries are protected against future disruptions.

“Aberfeldy Shipping is stepping up to rebuild our maritime capacity,” says Mr Findlay.

“It’s time for the incoming government to back New Zealand coastal shipping to ensure New Zealand has the sovereign maritime capability, skilled workforce, and supply chain security an island nation requires.”
