Allied Petroleum Introduces Mobil Ethos+ Renewable Diesel R20 (Cooking Oil) to New Zealand
Posted: 10-Apr-2025 |

In a leap toward sustainability, Allied Petroleum has become the first in New Zealand to test Mobil Ethos+ Renewable Diesel R20 (R20) in a trial aimed at transforming the nation’s transport industry. This innovative fuel, produced in partnership with ExxonMobil Australia and New Zealand, boasts a unique composition of 20% renewable diesel derived from used cooking oil—repurposing waste into clean energy while maintaining the performance of traditional diesel.

The trial involves five Allied Petroleum fuel tankers based in Christchurch, with promising early results that demonstrate major environmental and operational benefits. Notable highlights of R20 include: Cuts carbon emissions by up to 15.4% over conventional diesel.

No engine modifications necessary*: it works seamlessly in most modern diesel engines.

Identical performance and power to regular diesel, allowing businesses to make the switch without compromise.

This marks a major step in the journey toward decarbonizing New Zealand’s heavy transport sector while simultaneously supporting the global drive for renewable energy solutions.

Allied Petroleum recently celebrated the arrival of the first shipment of R20 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Christchurch. The event was attended by key figures in the energy and transport sectors, including Anthony Jones, CEO of HW Richardson Group; Hon. Simon Watts, MP; and Wayne Ellery, Chairman of Mobil Oil New Zealand Limited.

“This trial represents the future of fuel in New Zealand. By adopting renewable diesel in place of traditional fossil fuels, we enable measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions without compromising on reliability or performance,” said Anthony Jones.

Hon. Simon Watts echoed the importance of this milestone: “Innovations like R20 are key drivers of economic and environmental sustainability for New Zealand. It’s exciting to see these developments happening here in Christchurch.”

R20 offers an environmentally conscious solution for businesses across New Zealand seeking to reduce their carbon footprint without costly overhauls to their fleets. By requiring no alterations to modern diesel engines certified to CAN/CGSB 3.520, ASTM D975, or EN15940 standards*, R20 is a plug-and-play alternative that makes renewable energy adoption seamless.

According to a life-cycle analysis based on the United States GREET 2023 model, R20 achieves up to 15.4% lower greenhouse gas emissions (Carbon Intensity) when compared with conventional diesel. These reductions are achieved by repurposing waste cooking oil into efficient renewable diesel, offering a practical and scalable solution for companies looking to align their operations with sustainability goals.

Currently under trial, R20 will soon be available to Allied Petroleum customers. Businesses across sectors—transportation, logistics, and more—are advised to watch this space closely as this revolutionary fuel becomes more widely accessible over time.
