Drivers can now see what is planned for Wellington’s upcoming state highway summer maintenance season. 

Roxanne Hilliard, Wellington Alliance Manager says the Wellington Transport Alliance will be resurfacing 36 kilometres of highway with asphalt and rebuilding another 5 kilometres. In addition, 16 kilometres of chipseal resurfacing will be carried out across the region. 

“We will be investing around $30 million for this season’s work programme. The outcome will be better state highways and an improved experience for drivers.” 

Wairarapa - Ms Hilliard says plans for work in the Wairarapa have already been made public.

“We are making an early start in the Wairarapa, with a road rebuild that started in Carterton near Andersons Line at the end of August. After the discovery of unexpected soft ground conditions, the remainder of the work will continue at a later date.”

“Further work is planned in Carterton near Brooklyn Road this month (September), Greytown in November, and Solway (Masterton) in April next year.” 

Major State Highway 2 rebuild programme coming for Wairarapa 

SH1 Transmission Gully - More drainage and resurfacing work will also be taking place on Transmission Gully over summer. Drainage works and pavement reconstruction are planned. But precise timing and schedules are still to be decided.

This year’s works will be significantly smaller than last year’s, and most of the work will be able to be done with lane closures meaning the impact will be far less disruptive than last year’s programme.

More details will be shared with the public when the work schedules are confirmed.

Wellington - Ms Hilliard says work has already begun on State Highway 1 between Wellington Airport and Ngauranga.

“We completed our road rebuild at Cobham Drive in late August. Further work includes road rebuilds on SH1 at Churton Park and Newlands in October.” 

“We also have resurfacing work coming up in early October on the State Highway 1 Urban Motorway. Drivers should plan ahead and follow the signposted detour during the closure.”

Hutt Valley - Ms Hilliard says there is also an extensive resurfacing programme planned from Lower Hutt to Upper Hutt.

“Work crews will be working across various sites from Horokiwi through to Māoribank.” 

“Drivers can expect night closures and local road detours through the Hutt Valley while we carry out significant improvements on State Highway 2,” Ms Hilliard says.

Ms Hilliard says that drivers can expect to see a lot of activity particularly around Lower Hutt as the Melling Improvements Project is underway. 

“This is not part of the Wellington Transport Alliance summer maintenance programme, but drivers should be aware of the impact this project will have on journey time.”

Kāpiti Coast - Ms Hilliard says, like last year, another road rebuild is planned on State Highway 1 between Ōtaki and Levin. 

“We have a road rebuild planned for Manakau during this summer maintenance season and resurfacing work planned for Waikanae.” 

“Once the rebuild in Manakau is complete, drivers can expect a safer, smoother and more resilient road, while reducing the need for short-term maintenance.”
