The investment into Wairarapa’s state highways continues, with a significant season of road rebuilds planned to begin next month.

The first project will get underway on State Highway 2 in Carterton from late August. Further sites will be completed over the upcoming state highway summer maintenance season through to mid-2027. 

The rebuilds will provide a stronger and more durable road and reduce the need for ongoing short-term maintenance.

Roxanne Hilliard, Wellington Alliance Manager, says the programme is being signalled early because of the amount of work planned and the impact it will have on the public. 

“We know the Wairarapa community has experienced a lot of roadwork disruption in recent years, and there are further disruptions ahead. These rebuilds are significant works, but they are necessary to improve the condition and long-term resilience of the highway.” 

“Road rebuilds typically have a lifespan of up to 25 years, with resurfacing needed approximately every 10 years. That means more disruption while the work is underway, but a longer-lasting result for people who use this route,” Ms Hilliard says.

How road rebuilds work and why they are needed Ms Hilliard says the local geography and past construction methods have a significant impact on Wairarapa roads.

“Because of the river gravels and subsoils, the older sections of the highway network are much more prone to water damage and potholes.”

“Modern construction methods provide a much stronger foundation for the highway, making the pavement more durable and less prone to damage,” Ms Hilliard says.

“However, road rebuilds are more intensive than resurfacing. Crews need to excavate deep into the road and rebuild it using multiple layers of structural asphalt. It is not safe for traffic to drive on an excavated road, which means work is more disruptive and detours are needed,” Ms Hilliard says.
