Plan Ahead For Further SH73 Work
Posted: 19-Mar-2026 |

Work on a key bridge link is complete, but those travelling on State Highway 73 between Christchurch and the West Coast should be aware of other work underway that may extend their journeys over the coming days.

This morning resurfacing was successfully completed on Kellys Creek Bridge, between Otira and Jacksons, following an overnight closure.

Other important work underway on SH73 includes rock scaling between Arthur’s Pass and Lake Pearson to keep the highway safe, and this means temporary holds of traffic daily during the hours of 8am and 5pm, through until Friday 27 March, 2026. People should expect delays of up to 30 minutes at the site of the rock scaling.

In addition, road surface repairs can be expected at various sites between Kumara and Otira through the remainder of this week. Road users should plan for short delays of up to 10 minutes because of this work.

Next week, from Tuesday 24 March to Friday 27 March, bridge repair work will be carried out on the Otira Viaduct and traffic management in place daily between 8am and 5pm will mean delays of up to 30 minutes for road users. This holding of traffic is to allow contractors to safely complete work on the bridge expansion joints.

Roading crews will continue seizing what opportunities they can when the weather is good to complete roadworks programmed in for the current summer maintenance season. We thank people for their patience while this work is completed.
