The NZTA registration data for 2025 sees only 3,720 registrations for the full year, a decrease of 32.17% compared to 2024 (5488 registrations), and a long way behind the all- time high of 6,183 units in 2023.
The new trailer market is also slow year-on-year with total registrations of 928 units, from the 1403 total achieved in 2024. It’s also a long way behind the record which remains the 1714 new units achieved in 2018.

While Isuzu topped the registration numbers its market share reduced slightly during 2025. Closing the year with 92 registrations during November and December took the Isuzu full-year registration total to 676 units while its market share finished at 18.2% (down from 19.4% in 2024).
Fuso (569 full year/117 Nov-Dec) ranks second for the year and led the market in Nov-Dec, increasing market share from 14.7% in 2024 to 15.3% last year.
Hino (513/61) completes the year in third place ahead of Scania (340/41). Hino achieves an increase of market share from 10.7% in 2024 to 13.8% in 2025 while Scania drops share YOY with 11.8% in 2024 to 9.1% in 2024.
Iveco (288/50) holds fifth position ahead of Mercedes-Benz (235/62), Kenworth (191/10), Volvo (177/7), DAF (136/17) and UD (133/21) completing the top-10.
In the crossover 3.5-4.5t GVM segment, long-time leader Fiat (471/158) remains dominant with a 30.8% share. LDV (417/139) ranks second, followed by Mercedes-Benz (396/138) and Ford (92/12) in a distant fourth position. The top three in the market hold a 84.0% share of the segment.
The 4.5-7.5t GVM segment leader is Isuzu (237/30) with a 20.3% share ahead of Fuso (217/28) with a 18.6% share. Iveco (178/24) ranks third ahead of Mercedes-Benz (155/30) and Hino (120/21).
In the 7.5-15t segment, Isuzu (303/45) is the clear market leader taking 39.0% share, well ahead of Hino (177/19) in second and Fuso (156/30) in third. Again the top three brands in this segment hold an 82.0% share.
Hino (55/2) leads the 15-20.5t division ahead of Fuso (42/21) in second. UD (23/6), Iveco (14/3), Isuzu (9/2) and Volvo (8/0) are next.
The 20.5-23t category continues to represent a tiny slice of the market with only 29 registrations. Hino (14/0) holds a commanding 48.3% market share ahead of Scania (10/1) and Isuzu (3/1) in third.
In the premium 23t-max GVM segment, the 1580 new registrations during 2025 is a 37.27% decrease from last year’s 2,519 units.
Scania (321/40) enjoys sales leadership in the premium category for the sixth consecutive years and now holds a 20.3% market.
The market saw quite a bit of movement in the positions for the top 10 with Kenworth (191/10) climbing from third position in 2024 into second with a 12.1% market share, moving ahead of Volvo (169/7) with a 10.7% market share.
Fuso (153/38) moves into fourth position (from sixth) ahead of Hino (147/19). DAF (136/17) ranks sixth, followed by Isuzu (124/14) in seventh. UD (106/14) holds position while Iveco (77/22) moves one spot ahead of Mercedes-Benz (65/25).
The 2025 trailer market sees Fruehauf (149/14) achieve the top spot for the third consecutive year ahead of Patchell. Fruehauf registered 149 trailers in 2025 and took a 16.1% share (up from 15.0% last year) of the market.
Patchell (92/9) achieved more sales (up from 84 last year) and a larger market share (up from 6.0% in 2024 to 9.9% last year).
Transport Trailers (66/6) moves ahead of Roadmaster (58/7) holding third and fourth respectively while Domett (53/5) drops into fifth (from second) ahead of TMC (46/8) (from fourth). TES (41/6) moves up into seventh ahead of M.T.E (36/0) and Transfleet (34/3) while Fairfax (31/5) rounds out the top-10 for 2025.
