The New Zealand truck market continues its quiet 2025 performance, with May figures confirming low volumes across both new truck and trailer registrations.
The May 2025 registration total of 279 new trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) is just head of the April figure of 270 units. Trailers performed slightly better with 71 new registrations, up from 65 the previous month.
Total new truck sales in the first five months of the year are now 1466 units, down from 2399 registrations in the January-May 2024 period.
The 71 trailer registrations for May lifts the year-to-date (YTD) total to 391 units, a long way behind last year’s YTD total of 674 and 2018’s record figure of 702.

In the overall 4.5t to maximum GVM new truck market, Isuzu retains the lead with 49 new registrations for May – taking its 2025 total to 257 registrations, well behind last year’s 501 YTD total registrations.
Hino (223/54) continues to strengthen its hold on second spot and is one manufacturer still holding firm on its 2024 sales volumes. Hino YTD total registrations are just behind its 2024 total of 233, while its market share at 15.2% compares to 9.7% for the same period last year.
Meanwhile third-placed Fuso achieved 35 registrations for May and reaches 200 YTD, representing a market share decrease from 17.9% last year to 13.6% this year.
Scania (YTD 164/May 23) remains in fourth position with Volvo (104/34) moving ahead of Kenworth (100/17) and Iveco (89/11) in sixth and seventh. DAF (54/7), Mercedes-Benz (53/8) and UD (49/9) retain positions to round out the top-10.
The crossover 3.5-4.5t GVM segment is a very tight battle for leadership with Fiat (125/34) regaining the number one spot for the first time this year, just one registration ahead of LDV (124/24).
In the 4.5-7.5t GVM class, Isuzu (93/16) continues a lead ahead of second-placed Fuso (67/17). Iveco (53/7) follows in third place.
The 7.5-15t GVM category is another where Isuzu (104/28) leads with Hino (83/21) and Fuso (64/10) next. Foton (17/6) retains fourth ahead of Hyundai (15/4).
Hino (31/7) retains the number one spot in the 15-20.5t GVM division. Fuso (10/0) holds second, ahead of UD (5/1) in third ahead of newcomer Volvo (4/4), while MAN (2/0) and Scania (2/1) are now tied in fifth.
In the tiny 20.5-23t segment, Hino (6/2) continues to hold the top spot with six registrations. Scania (2/1) picked up the only other registration for the month.
Registrations in the premium 23t to maximum GVM segment see a continuation of Scania’s leadership with 21 registrations in May boosting its YTD total to 159 units and holding a YTD share of 22.3%. This is a long way off last year’s 267 YTD registrations but the same market share of 22.3%.
Kenworth (100/17) and Volvo (100/30) are now tied in second position, Volvo achieving an impressive 30 registrations to top the segment for the month.
Hino (68/15) moves into fourth place at the expense of Isuzu (59/5) while Fuso (58/8) retains sixth. DAF (54/7), UD (42/7), Iveco (23/4) and Mercedes-Benz (16/1) all retain their top-10 positions.
In the trailer market, Fruehauf (61/13) is building its lead. Although it achieved 90 registrations at the same period last year, Fruehauf is continuing to grow its market share from 13.4% to 15.6% year-on-year.
Second-placed Transport Trailers (36/7) stays ahead of Patchell (28/3) in third just ahead of both Domett (25/2) and Roadmaster (25/5) tied in fifth. TMC (17/2) retains position ahead of M.T.E (16/3) while Transfleet (15/3) moves ahead of TES (14/2) and Lowes (13/2) continues to round out the top-10.
