In COVID-19 times, July’s new truck market was positive – maintaining similar registrations to the previous month.

Then again, that “new normal” was still well down on the market at the same point last year: July’s 380 registrations in the overall truck market were 20% down on the same month last year.

Worse, it brought the year-to-date registration total to 2247 – fully 27% down on the 3096 sales at the same point last year.

Similarly, the 133 trailer registrations amounted to 17 more than in June….but the 683 registrations to the end of July were still almost 25% down on the 910 at the same point last year.

New Zealand’s new truck market steadied in June as the country returned – on the home front at least – to something approaching normal in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown.

But that new normal is, so far, substantially down on the market at the same point in 2019.

The 361 June registrations for the overall market (trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) amounted to a 33% decrease on June last year. May’s 372 registrations were 28% down on the same month in 2019.

The trailer market also steadied at a similar level – the 116 June registrations one more than in May…but 32% down on June 2019.

The 372 registrations in the overall market (all trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) were at least a big jump-up from the coronavirus-savaged April low….which saw just 89 registrations.

May’s activity brought the year-to-date truck sales tally to 1506 – a whopping 32% and 712 trucks down on the 2218 sold in the first five months of 2019.

The trailer market also bounced back, with 115 trailers registered in May – a spectacular improvement from the mere eight in April&... ...

The coronavirus wreaked havoc with New Zealand’s new truck market in April – the Level 4 state of emergency, unsurprisingly, reducing monthly registrations to historic lows.

The widespread expectation that this unprecedented closedown of the country to stop the global COVID-19 pandemic taking a devastating hold here, came to pass – with a vengeance.

Just 89 new trucks in the overall market (all trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) were registered….and trailermakers put a mere eight units on the road.

The scale of the savaging that the heavy commercial vehicle market took in April is revealed by a comparison of the figures with those fo... ...
