With exactly 500 new registrations for the month, May 2023 is the third highest month of May on record for New Zealand heavy truck sales and the market continues to run ahead of previous benchmarks.

Overall truck market (4.5 tonnes to maximum GVM) registrations of 500 units is 18 units (-3.4%) behind the May 2019 record volume and 11 units behind May 2022.

But the consistently strong market in 2023 means year-to-date (YTD) registrations to the end of May continue at record levels. The 2452 registrations in the first five months of this year is 25.5% ahead compared to last year’s 1952 units and is 10.5% ahead of the pre-Covid best of 2218 registrations in Janu... ... 

The 2022 truck and trailer market leaders continue to solidify their positions by achieving strong October registrations. 

Overall, the October figures see a drop in new truck registrations compared to September, but the monthly total of 563 is still well ahead of the 477 units achieved in October 2021.

Year-to-date for 10 months the 4973 new truck registrations are well ahead of the 4036 registrations in the same period last year and also the best previous Jan-Oct result of 4566 units from 2019.

Fuso has secured the number one position in New Zealand’s new truck market for the second year running, following on from ending Isuzu’s 21-year leadership run in 2021.

Data for 2022 also confirms a new record for new truck sales (with a GVM above 4.5 tonnes) with 5987 registrations for the full year. The market is up by 15.3% compared to 2021 (5190 registrations) and the 2022 total betters the previous record year in 2019 which saw 5314 registrations.

New Zealand’s new truck market continued to perform strongly in September – staying ahead of last year’s sales volumes.

September saw 649 registrations of heavy trucks above 4.5 tonnes GVM, compared to 475 in September 2021. That lifted the year-to-date total sales at the three-quarter mark of the year to 4410, compared to 3559 in the same period last year.

The trailer market posted 128 registrations for the month, well behind last year’s 146 registrations and very close to matching the 129 registrations in both September 2018 and 2019.
