The New Zealand new truck market continues
to break records with 424 registrations (trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) during April.

It was a 4.1% improvement on the previous best-ever April registrations tally of 407 units recorded last year according to official NZ Transport Agency data. And year-to-date for the first four months of the year the total is 1952 units – a 13.9% increase on last year’s 1713 registrations and also a record number for January-April.

The trailer market – while buoyant with 104 April registrations – is still 42 units shy of 2018’s record April performance of 146 registrations. The YTD total at the end of April stands at 454, ... ...

Commercial vehicle registrations (GVM of 4.5 tonnes-plus) continue to gain momentum with record numbers achieved during March.

The previous best-ever figure for a month of March had been of 511 registrations (March 2022). An impressive 652 registrations during March 2023 easily eclipses the previous record. 

This record total monthly figure also lifts the YTD total to 1528 units, the strongest first-quarter performance on record. The monthly total of 652 represents an increase of 27.6% over March 2022 while YTD the market is now 16.9% up on the previous record of 1306 units set in March 2022.

The trailer market is also moving back towards pre-Covid... ...

New truck registrations continued on a positive path in February, with registrations ahead of pre-Covid records.

The February performance of the truck segment is a marked contrast to the overall new vehicle market which experienced a downturn largely attributed to the widespread disruption caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Total registrations of 9,541 new vehicles for February were 23.7% down (2,960 units) on February 2022, and it was the lowest month of February since 2014.

According to NZTA provisional data, 476 new truck (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes-plus) registrations in February is a 4.6% increase on the 455 sales in February 2022, and an increase of 22.3%... ...

New truck registrations tracked largely as expected in January, recording a strong start to the year.

Both new truck and trailer sales totals in January are ahead of January 2022 and the market is steadily tracking closer to pre-Covid record levels.

According to NZTA provisional data there were 400 trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes-plus) registered in the first month of the new year, a solid 17.6% increase on the 340 sales in January 2022. However 2019 still provides the strongest January on record for truck sales with 416 registrations.
