New Zealand’s new truck market stayed consistent in July – the year-to-date sales at the end of the month continuing to lag 9.5% behind 2019’s benchmark.

The month saw 429 trucks with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes registered, taking the YTD total to 2801 – compared to 3096 in the last “normal” (ie pre-COVID) year.

In the trailer market, 134 July registrations carried the 2021 total to 855 – almost 16% behind 2018’s alltime best of 1017. 

In July’s overall truck market, FUSO did best with 88 registrations, compared to longtime market leader Isuzu’s 61 (and third-placed Hino’s 73).

There were 341 registrations of new trucks with a GVM above 4.5 tonnes during September and the year-to-date (YTD) total has reached 2824 registrations for the first nine months of 2025.

The September total is well down from last year’s 425 registrations and slightly down on the August 2025 total of 356 registrations. The YTD total represents a 32.6% decrease on the same period last year (4194 registrations) as the new truck market continues to reflect general trends in the New Zealand economy.

The trailer market in September achieved 86 registrations, slightly ahead of the 83 recorded in the same month last year. However, the YTD total of 696 registrations is 38% behind the 1123... ...

New truck registrations from July are again well behind last year’s figures as truck sales continue to reflect the overall state of the New Zealand economy.

The monthly registrations showed just 367 new truck sales, well behind the July 2024 volume of 446 registrations, equating to a 17.7% year-on-year decrease.

Year-to-date the 2,126 registrations in the first seven months of the year compares to 3,275 in the same period last year.

The YTD tally of 550 trailer registrations is 40.68% down on last year’s 926 units registered by July 2024 and 45.9% down on the record year-to-date total of 1017 new trailers registered in Jan-July 2018.

The New Zealand truck market continues its quiet 2025 performance, with May figures confirming low volumes across both new truck and trailer registrations.

The May 2025 registration total of 279 new trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) is just head of the April figure of 270 units. Trailers performed slightly better with 71 new registrations, up from 65 the previous month.

Total new truck sales in the first five months of the year are now 1466 units, down from 2399 registrations in the January-May 2024 period.

The 71 trailer registrations for May lifts the year-to-date (YTD) total to 391 units, a long way behind last year’s YTD total of 674 and ... ...
