New truck registrations from July are again well behind last year’s figures as truck sales continue to reflect the overall state of the New Zealand economy.

The monthly registrations showed just 367 new truck sales, well behind the July 2024 volume of 446 registrations, equating to a 17.7% year-on-year decrease.

Year-to-date the 2,126 registrations in the first seven months of the year compares to 3,275 in the same period last year.

The YTD tally of 550 trailer registrations is 40.68% down on last year’s 926 units registered by July 2024 and 45.9% down on the record year-to-date total of 1017 new trailers registered in Jan-July 2018.

The New Zealand truck market continues its quiet 2025 performance, with May figures confirming low volumes across both new truck and trailer registrations.

The May 2025 registration total of 279 new trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more) is just head of the April figure of 270 units. Trailers performed slightly better with 71 new registrations, up from 65 the previous month.

Total new truck sales in the first five months of the year are now 1466 units, down from 2399 registrations in the January-May 2024 period.

The 71 trailer registrations for May lifts the year-to-date (YTD) total to 391 units, a long way behind last year’s YTD total of 674 and ... ...

New Zealand’s new truck and trailer registration figures confirm a slow start to 2025, with the January data for both sectors well below the January 2024 volumes.

According to NZTA provisional data there were 339 trucks (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes-plus) registered during the first month of the new year, a hefty 26.6% decrease on the 462 sales from January 2024.

Official NZ Transport Agency registration data shows that trailer registrations are also significantly down year-on-year for the start of 2025, with 87 registrations being a 41.2% decrease on the January 2024 total of 148.

The New Zealand new truck market began to show signs of slowing in April.

NZ Transport Agency data shows 460 new trucks were registered for the month in the overall market (trucks with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or more), taking the total sales for the first four months of the year to 1940.

The total for the same January-April period last year was 1952 registrations, but for context the latest result is still the second-highest January-April registration total.

The trailer market is remaining buoyant – with 133 April registrations – which is just 13 shy of 2018’s record April performance of 146 registrations. The YTD total at the end of April stands at 541,... ...
