Sealed Roads Becoming an issue for the South

According to a recent article by Matthew Rosenberg - Local Democracy Reporter, three Southland roads are at risk of reverting to gravel as the district council struggles to maintain its network amid funding issues.
A report prepared for a Wednesday meeting said Southland District Council had the second largest road network in the country with close to 5000km of roads.
But with a small ratepayer base - and unable to secure enough funding from the National Land Transport Plan - it was now having to make sacrifices....

Night works begin next week that will see State Highway 1 Ngauranga Gorge closed to southbound traffic between Johnsonville southbound offramp and Ngauranga Interchange.
The highway’s southbound lanes will be closed for two nights of resurfacing – Sunday, 2 February and Monday, 3 February, between 9 pm and 4:30 am.
Closing the road at night when there are fewer vehicles on the road reduces disruption, allows more work to be completed faster, and ensures workers are kept safe on this steep section of road.

National road freight association Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand has welcomed today’s Government announcement reversing speed limit reductions on 38 sections of the state highway network, saying the changes will reduce journey times and help avoid dangerous behaviour by frustrated drivers.
Speed limits on 49 further sections of state highway will be put out for public consultation to allows local communities to have their say on whether to revert to previous speed limits.
