Truckometer - Monthly Falls but up Year on Year

The Light Traffic Index (LTI) fell 1.3% in June and is 0.9% higher than a year ago. The more volatile Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) also fell 1.3% in the month, but is up 3.0% y/y.
Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. It typically provides a six-month lead on momentum in the economy, with variation reflecting discretionary spending on outings, movement of couriers and tradespeople etc.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) will soon begin construction of two sets of average speed safety cameras to improve safety in Bay of Plenty.
Average speed safety cameras are being used by NZTA to reduce serious crashes along high-risk corridors and roads. The technology is internationally proven to be highly effective at reducing deaths and serious injuries on longer sections of road. The Ministry of Transport’s surprise cancellation of a long-anticipated freight study has been slammed by national freight body Transporting New Zealand, who says it will leave policymakers guessing when it comes to investing in road, rail and coastal Shipping.
